Ponytail Tricks That Work

A ponytail sounds like the simplest hairstyle in the world — gather, tie, done.
But if you've ever noticed that some ponytails look effortlessly polished while yours falls flat within the hour, the difference isn't your hair.
It's the technique. A few small adjustments can completely transform the result.
Start With the Right Prep
The foundation of a great ponytail is what happens before the hair tie goes in. Skipping prep is the most common reason ponytails look limp or messy by midday.
1. Apply a lightweight volumising mousse or texturising spray to damp hair before drying — this gives fine hair the grip it needs to hold its shape. 2. If your hair is freshly washed and slippery, a small amount of dry shampoo at the roots adds texture and helps the ponytail stay in place without sliding down. 3. For a sleek ponytail, brush thoroughly before tying — but for a fuller, more voluminous look, flip your head upside down and gather the hair from that position. The result sits higher and has natural lift at the crown.
The Two-Tie Trick for Instant Volume
This is one of the most effective — and least known — ponytail techniques. Instead of securing your ponytail with a single hair tie, use two.
Tie the first hair tie loosely about two centimetres from the base. Then place the second tie directly below it, slightly tighter. Gently push the first tie upward toward the crown while holding the second in place. This creates a small bubble of lifted hair at the base that makes the entire ponytail appear fuller and higher without any extensions or padding.
It takes less than thirty seconds and makes a visible difference, especially on thinner hair.
How to Make a Ponytail Look Longer
If length is what you're after, the answer isn't always extensions. Technique can add the illusion of several extra centimetres.
1. Position the ponytail slightly lower than feels natural — a mid-height ponytail hangs longer than a high one simply because of gravity and the angle of the fall. 2. After tying, gently pull small sections of hair outward from the ponytail length to loosen and elongate the shape. This also adds movement. 3. Wrap a small section of hair around the base of the tie and secure it underneath with a bobby pin — this hides the elastic and creates a seamless, polished finish that visually extends the look.
Keeping It in Place All Day
A ponytail that droops or shifts position by noon is a technique problem, not a hair problem. A few targeted fixes make a significant difference in longevity.
1. Use a spiral hair tie rather than a standard elastic — these grip without slipping and cause far less breakage over time. 2. After tying, mist the entire ponytail lightly with a flexible-hold hairspray, then smooth with your hand. This sets the shape without stiffness. 3. If your ponytail consistently falls lower throughout the day, try securing a small, clear bobby pin horizontally just above the hair tie — it acts as an anchor that prevents the elastic from migrating downward.
The Sleek Ponytail Without Flyaways
Flyaways are the most common complaint when attempting a polished, pulled-back ponytail. The solution is simpler than most people expect.
Apply a very small amount of a lightweight hair serum or even a clean edge-control product along the hairline and over the surface of the ponytail using a soft bristle brush or a clean mascara wand. Work in the direction of the hair growth, not against it. This technique tames short hairs without weighing the ponytail down or leaving a greasy finish.
For the nape of the neck — where hairs are often shortest and most resistant — a tiny amount of the same product applied with your fingertip and smoothed downward works better than any brush.
The ponytail is one of those hairstyles that rewards attention to detail in a way that almost no one notices consciously — but everyone registers. When it's done well, it looks like you put in no effort at all. And perhaps that's the real skill: making the technique invisible, so all anyone sees is the result. Once you know these tricks, you'll never go back to just gather, tie, done.
